Ishmael’s Thought Process

We were riding in the car yesterday and I had bought a big bag of potato chips that were sitting in view between the front seats. The sandwiches were in the trunk, and we were on our way to have a picnic and go to the library for the afternoon.

Ishmael asked, “Are potato chips made out of camels? …Because I just opened my window”.

I had to ask him a whole series of questions to understand what he was talking about. Here are the thoughts step by step that got him to his question –

  1. It’s getting hot in here. I wonder why.
  2. The potato chips are new to the car. The potato chips must be very hot and they are heating up the car.
  3. Camels are hot.
  4. Perhaps potato chips are made out of camels.
  5. I think I’ll open my window.
